🆕 Enhancement releases

We've been busy! Here's a sneak peek at our May and June 2025 new features and improvements:

Dynamic Math Questions Added to Numeric Question Type

Dynamic math questions are a type of interactive problem that changes or adapts in real-time based on a user's input or a set of predefined parameters. Unlike static questions, which always present the same numbers or scenarios, dynamic questions offer a fresh experience each time they are encountered. This adaptability makes them a powerful tool in education, assessment, and personalized learning.

Translation available as Add-on to School & District plan

Formative's translation feature is now available as a paid add-on for the School & District plan! This feature instantly translates activity text into 30+ languages, supporting multilingual students in real time.

New Add Item Modal

We've streamlined the item creation experience in the editor to help teachers create activities faster and smarter. In the new, streamlined modal, teachers can now:

  • Preview content and question types visually before selecting

  • Upload images or documents directly

  • Generate questions with AI

  • Search the library or item bank to pull in content

Plus, question and content types are now grouped by free vs. paid, making access clearer.

AI-powered item generator in Item Bank!

We've added an AI-powered item generator to Formative's Item Bank! When a filter returns no results, teachers can instantly generate up to 10 high-quality items tailored to their selected grade, subject, question type, difficulty, language, and standards.

The model has been trained in collaboration with our Newsela content experts, so teachers can be confident that they are getting a high-quality item!

Generate Similar Questions from the 3-Dot Menu

Teachers can now generate similar questions directly from the 3-dot menu within assessments. This streamlines the process of creating practice or scaffolded items, helping teachers better differentiate instruction and provide targeted support for students.

Standards Tags for Underperforming Questions

We now display standards tags on questions that show signs of underperformance. This gives teachers quicker insights into which standards may need reteaching or further emphasis, helping improve student outcomes through data-informed instruction.

Text-to-Speech for Translated Formatives

Text-to-Speech now reads content in the same language as the student’s selected translation. This improves accessibility and creates a more consistent experience for multilingual learners.

'Time to Submit' Metrics Added

Teachers can now view the maximum, average, and least amount of time students spent on a Formative in the Insights tab. This helps educators quickly spot pacing issues or student engagement patterns.

Manual Student Group Creation

Student groups can now be created manually, giving teachers greater control over differentiation and personalized assignments.

Quiz Mode: Auto-Progress Enhancement

In Quiz Mode, questions now auto-advance when a student answers correctly. This improves pacing and keeps students focused during timed assessments.

Printing Improvements

We’ve improved formatting for functionalized text and inline choice questions in printed format, and reduced unnecessary spacing for cleaner printouts.

Notification Section Update

We’ve added a new Notifications page to help organize alerts and provide the same visibility as the in-app notification popover.

Force Submit Visibility

Teachers will now see when a student's submission has been force submitted. This transparency helps clarify submission issues and ensures teachers have the full context.

🛠️ Fixes

Every technological tool runs into hiccups here and there. If you run into any technical issues please submit a report to our team so we could go ahead and fix it!

Scheduled Job Improvements for Data Exports and OneRoster Imports

We are adding an option to specify an approximate time window for when data export or OneRoster import jobs will be triggered. This replaces the previous, unintuitive minimum 24-hour logic. The added scheduling flexibility ensures smoother operations for admins, supporting better system readiness for teachers and students.

Expanded Admin Visibility in Content Access Settings

Admins can now view and select all organizations beneath their own in the Content Access (CA) settings, without needing to be added to each sub-org or team. This simplifies content targeting at the department or school level, ensuring that students and teachers receive access more quickly and with greater precision.

Print Rubric Improvements

Enhancements have been made to the Print Rubric capability, improving formatting.

AI Question Generation Expanded

The AI generator can now produce up to 25 questions at once, saving teachers significant prep time for assessments or practice sets.

New Languages for Student Translation Tool

We’ve added Nepali, Telugu, Tamil, and Bosnian to available translations. This supports a wider range of multilingual learners and promotes equity in the classroom.

Updated AI Model

We've upgraded to the full o3 model for AI functionality, offering more accurate and context-aware content generation for teachers.
