The Question of the Day (QOTD) is a feature designed to engage students with quick, subject-specific questions that encourage platform use and foster a sense of community. Here’s everything you need to know about the QOTD:

Overview

QOTD is an interactive feature currently available for 8th grade Math, 8th grade Algebra I, 10th grade Science, and 10th grade Biology students. Each question is aligned with state standards to provide valuable practice content and ensure relevance to key topics in these subjects.

QOTD will be live on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of a given week, with each question becoming available at 5 AM PT / 8 AM ET / 13:00 UTC and remaining active for 24 hours.

Teachers can opt-in to participating in QOTD starting January 7th, 2025. First question will be released to students on January 14th, 2025.

For Teachers

QOTD is a great way to kick off your students’ engagement with the platform. By enabling QOTD:

  • Students are encouraged to log in to Formative regularly, helping them get comfortable with the platform.

  • You can reinforce learning with state-aligned content that complements your curriculum.

  • QOTD includes tools to review, distribute, and analyze student performance, helping you track engagement and understanding over time.

For Students

QOTD is designed to make logging into Formative an enjoyable and rewarding experience.

  • Fresh Content: See new questions throughout the week, with topics ranging from challenging algebra problems to thought-provoking science concepts.

  • Community Engagement: Feel like part of a broader learning community by participating in these questions.

  • Track Your Progress: With plans to incorporate streak counters, you’ll be motivated to participate consistently and keep your streak alive.

Assign QOTD Activity

On your Home Page, locate the Question of the Day section and click 'View & Assign Activity'

The formative aligned to your account's subject & grade level (8th grade Math, 8th grade Algebra I, 10th grade Science, and 10th grade Biology) will open up and display the question(s) currently available to assign. If prompted, add the associated standards set to your account.

Proceed to click on the 'Assign' button, select the class(es) to assign to, and confirm by clicking the 'Assign' button at the bottom of the window.

The Student Experience

When your students log into their Formative accounts, they will click on the 'Challenge!' button at the bottom of their left-side menu to launch the activity.

They will be presented with the Question of the Day:

If the activity has not started yet, they will be met with a countdown letting them know when to check back again:

When students complete a question they will be presented with their achievement badge and progress

Also, the button on their left-side menu will change to read 'You did it!'

When a new question is posted, the button will change to read 'New!'

View Student Responses

Once responses have been logged on the activity, click on 'View Responses' under the QOTD section of your Home page.

From here, you can click on individual responses or view them in bulk and manually adjust the grades if needed. More on viewing and scoring formatives can be found here.

Note: Feedback is disabled on the QOTD activities

You can also view the activity's summary page by clicking on 'summary' at the top of the page.

Future Features

While QOTD starts with 8th grade Math, 8th grade Algebra I, 10th grade Science, and 10th grade Biology, future enhancements could include:

  • Expanding subjects and grade levels.

  • Introducing streak counters visible to both students and teachers to encourage consistent participation.

  • Additional tools for teachers to seamlessly incorporate QOTD into weekly routines.

QOTD is more than just a question—it’s a fun, focused way to boost engagement and build excitement about learning.
