Formative's comprehensive range of AI capabilities can primarily be utilized in two distinct ways. The first method involves direct, conversational interaction with Luna, Formative's AI-powered teaching assistant, which allows users to chat in real-time to build and edit activities and assessments. Luna guides users by asking follow-up questions and generating content, and can assist with tasks such as activity creation, personalizing outputs, providing customization help, and even generating activity ideas. The second approach leverages AI-supported features that are activated by filling out specific prompt fields, dropdown menus, and other input criteria. These features enable users to auto-generate full formatives like quizzes and lessons by defining topics, grade levels, difficulty, and question types; create individual questions by specifying types, subjects, and desired difficulty; generate text passages by setting parameters like genre, word count, and language; and also produce hints for questions, answer choice explanations, and feedback for student submissions by interacting with dedicated AI generation icons within the respective field.
Luna, the AI-Powered Teaching Assistant:
Luna is a live AI assistant that enables direct chat to build and edit activities and assessments, streamlining prep time for various content like bell ringers, lessons frameworks, quizzes, and exams.
Luna guides users in real-time by asking follow-up questions and generating ready-to-use content that can be edited or shared within Formative.
Key capabilities include activity creation (e.g., exit tickets, polls), personalized outputs based on user goals and account profiles (subjects, grade levels), and customization help for modifications and clarifications.
Luna can bulk-apply settings to questions it generates.
Additionally, Luna can create standards-aligned questions, hints, and answer choice explanations, and assist with activity idea generation.

AI Generated Activities (Quizzes and Lessons)
Formative can auto-generate full activities, including quizzes and lessons, from a desired topic and designated grade level.
Lessons will feature multiple sections with text passages and follow-up questions, while Quizzes will contain only questions.
Teachers can define the level of difficulty, length, and specific question types to be generated, such as Short Answer, Free Response, Numeric, True/False, Multiple Choice, and Multiple Selection.
Hints can also be generated for the questions within these activities.
After generation, the content is reviewable and editable.

AI Generated Questions
Formative allows teachers to generate specific questions with AI within an activity.
Compatible question types include Short Answer, Multiple Choice, Multiple Selection, True/False, Categorize, Matching, Numeric, and Free Response.
Teachers define the type of question, grade level(s), subject(s), and can optionally specify difficulty, language (English, German, Spanish, French), and alignment standards.
The AI provides suggestions that can be accepted, declined, or edited, with options to regenerate, or create similar, easier, or harder questions.
Teachers can add additional answer options and select which generated questions to include in their formative.

AI Generated Text Passages
AI can generate text passages for content summaries or test material.
Teachers select "Text Passage" as the content type and specify grade, subject, preferred genre, minimum/maximum word count, and language (English, French, German, Spanish).
The generated passage can be reviewed, edited, styled, and regenerated if needed.
A Pro Tip suggests copying parts of the generated text passage into a prompt to create directly related questions with AI.

AI Generated Hints
The system can generate hints for questions to save time.
Teachers click the AI generation icon in the "Add a hint" field to display options, which can be regenerated or edited.

Feedback is generated from the student's response and can be reviewed and edited before being sent instantly or as delayed feedback. Teachers are advised to screen student responses for sensitive information before sending AI-generated feedback.

PDF Parsing
Formative's AI can automatically pull questions from uploaded PDF documents, eliminating the need for manual entry.
Users upload a PDF, select "Parse with AI," and the system processes the document, extracting questions that populate the formative.
The parsed questions can then be reviewed and edited, and the original PDF can be optionally removed, leaving the generated questions as stand-alone items.
