Entering Scores Manually

When students need to take a formative assignment in Paper & Pencil form or outside of the Formative platform, teachers can still record the students' scores within the Formative system. This is important as it allows teachers and administrators to collect all scoring data in one place and include all student submissions in their data analysis and reporting.

Step 1: Submit / Force-Submit the Assignment (Required!)

Entering student scores manually into a formative can only be accomplished after the formative was submitted within the platform. If your students have not taken the formative online within the Formative platform and have not clicked on "Submit" for that reason, please follow the instructions listed below to Force Submit on their behalf. You can Force Submit for multiple students at once, or for a single student.

Note: When you Force Submit, Formative automatically scores the students' unanswered questions (if the question has an answer key). It will also trigger any returning of scores or answers that you may have set when assigning.

Force Submit for multiple students in a class:

You can force submit for multiple students at once. Here's how to do it:

  1. From the "View Responses" tab, make sure you are on the "Totals" view

  2. Next to the class you'd like to force submit, click on the icon (lightning bolt, lock or suitcase) to expand the drop down menu.

  3. From the options, select "Force Submissions".

  4. Deselect using the checkbox for any students you don't want to submit, and click "Submit"!

As a default, all students in the class will be check marked however you can un-check any of them you'd like to exclude from the mass forced-submission.
Once force-submitted, you will see any unanswered questions are now available to score!

If you toggle "Grade empty responses as zero" to green, this will automatically assign any unanswered question a score of "0".

Force Submit for a single student:

To force submit for a single student, you can repeat the process above, or follow these steps:

  1. From the "View Responses" tab, make sure you are on the "Totals" view

  2. Click on a student's name to open the right-side panel

  3. Within the right side panel, click on the triple dots to expand the drop down menu

  4. Click on " force submission" and proceed to confirm

Step 2: Edit the Scores

Once the formative has been submitted, all unanswered questions will either be scored as zero, or they will be un-scored (this will depend on whether the question has an answer key for auto-grading and on your preferences when force-submitting).

Now, you can edit the scores for each question by either changing the score directly in the scoring box, or by sliding the scoring-slider. The newly entered scores will update immediately, and if your formative is set to return scores the students will be able to view the scores in their accounts as well.

To edit the scores:

  1. Click on the individual response cell on the grid to expand the response panel (will open on the right side of your screen)

  2. Type the score into the box at the top right corner of the response panel. Alternatively you can drag the scoring-slider to the position of your choice

  3. Navigate to the next response using the navigation arrows at the top left corner of the response panel, or by clicking directly into the individual response cell on the grid

Step 3 (Optional): Attach the externally completed work

While teachers can not enter the students' responses on their behalf, the externally completed work can be added to the student's submission within Formative as an attached file or as an embedded image, by uploading it into the Feedback of any question.

Attaching the student's work as a file:

  1. Save a .DOC or .PDF file of the student's completed work to your device or to Google Drive (if applicable)

  2. Expand the response panel of a question and click into the Feedback field at the bottom

  3. Click on the little plus icon on the far right of the field, and select "File"

  4. Proceed to either upload a file from your device or import the file from Google Drive

  5. Once the file appears in the feedback field, complete the action by hitting the "Send feedback" button

  6. The file will now appear in the comment attached to the response

Embedding an Image of the student's work:

  1. Expand the response panel of a question and click into the Feedback field at the bottom

  2. Click on the little plus icon on the far right of the field, and select "Image"

  3. From here you can select your preferred method to embed the image:

    1. Drag & Drop or Click to upload an image saved to your device

    2. Pick an image from Google Drive

    3. Take a photo with your device's camera

  4. Once the image appears in the feedback field, complete the action by hitting the "Send feedback" button

  5. The image will now appear in the comment attached to the response
