Pausing Formatives

Have you ever found yourself needing to stop students from continuing their work on an assignment mid-class? Maybe a student with a Time Limit Extension accommodation needing to complete the assignment after school or in a different class with a resource specialist?

Perhaps you wanted to pause the entire class from working to do a whole class discussion or call their attention to clarify something? Maybe the bell was ringing and you didn't want them to continue until the next time you meet? Or did an interruption in the likes of a fire drill or an administrator walking in with an announcement take place?

As long as the formative is open, teachers can choose to pause the formative for the entire class at the same time, regardless of students' progress. They can also unpause it when ready to allow students to resume their work where they left off.

If the formative has a time limit set, pausing the formative will also pause the timer, once the formative is unpaused the timer will resume. When a formative has a time limit, teachers can also choose to pause it for individual students within the class.

Pause an entire class

Pause an Un-Timed Formative for the entire class

  1. Go to the "view responses" tab of the formative

  2. Click the green lightning bolt icon next to the class name

  3. Choose "Pause Assignment" from the dropdown

  4. The green lightning bolt icon will be replaced by the pause icon, and the students' formatives will be paused

Pause a Timed Formative for the entire class

  1. Go to the "view responses" tab of the formative

  2. Click the icon of the green lightning bolt with a clock on it next to the class name

  3. Choose "Pause Assignment and Timer" from the dropdown

When a formative has been paused for the entire class, the symbol next to the class' name on your "view responses" tab will be that of the Pause icon:

Unpause (resume) a previously paused Formative for the entire class

Note: Only students that are logged in to their accounts and have the formative open can have their formatives individually paused. If a student does not have the formative open, the option to pause / resume their individual formative will be grayed out.

  1. Go to the "view responses" tab of the formative

  2. Click the name of the class to reveal the students' list

  3. Click the Pause icon next to a student's name to pause that student's formative

  4. The Pause icon will be replaced by a Resume icon

Unpause (resume) a previously paused Timed Formative for an individual student

  1. Go to the "view responses" tab of the formative

  2. Click the name of the class to reveal the students' list

  3. Click the Resume icon next to a student's name to unpause that student's formative

  4. The Resume icon will be replaced by a Pause icon

Note: If a formative has a pre-defined close time in it's assign settings, it will close at the designated close time even if it is paused.

Student View

From the student's perspective, when a formative has been paused, they will no longer be able to view the formative's content, and a message on the screen will let them know that their teacher has paused the formative.

If a student is attempting to access a formative that has been paused, they will see an indication that the formative is paused on their dashboard view:
