Troubleshooting & Q&A

🙋🏽 Error message when attempting to export to Google Sheets

This error message indicates an issue with permissions on the Google account that block Google Drive exports into Formative.

This could be an issue with your browser's settings, your individual account, or the school's Google Workspace.

Checking your browser's settings:

As a first step, open your browser's settings and disable any pop-up blockers, ad blockers or third-party blockers and then try again:

  1. Click the 3 dot menu of your browser and choose "Settings"

  2. Click into the "Privacy and Security" tab and then into "Site Settings"

  3. Check that all permissions are granted to Formative, and that there are no blockers enabled for it

If, after following the steps above the issue persists, please proceed to check your individual Google account's permissions.

Checking your individual Google account's permissions:

  • Click on your Google account avatar and choose "manage your Google account"

  • Click into the Security tab

  • Scroll down to the section titled "Third-party apps with account access" and click "Manage third-party access"

  • Locate Formative on the list and click into the record

  • Compare the permissions on your screen with the screenshot below. Specifically you'll want to make sure that the following are enabled on your account as well:
    * Google Drive
See and download all your Google Drive files.
See, edit, create, and delete only the specific Google Drive files you use with this app

  • If you're not seeing this permission on your account, please click the "Remove Access" button and then login to your Formative account again. Our system will prompt you to re-accept the permissions. Then, follow the steps above again to check if the Google Drive permissions have been added

  • If, after following all the steps above, the Google Drive permission does not appear on the list, or if the issue otherwise persists, please reach out to your school's systems admin / IT department to check for Google Workspace permissions (see below)

Checking Google Workspace permissions:

Your school's IT department will be able to identify the Google Workspace admin for your organization. The admin should check the Google Workspace Admin Console and ensure that Formative is properly whitelisted and that all permissions have been granted.

We have found that this help article by Google will normally lead the admin to locate the permission that needs adjusting.
