What Is Check Answer?
Check Answer lets students check their response while they are taking a formative. When Check Answer is available, students can see whether their answer is correct, partially correct, or incorrect before they submit.
Check Answer is available when:
The question can be auto-graded.
The question has an answer key.
Return scores is set to Instantly.
Note: If the question has Answer Choice Explanations, students can also see the explanation when they use Check Answer.
What Are Check Answer Limits?
Check Answer Limits let teachers control how many times students can use Check Answer on an assignment. Teachers can choose:
Unlimited
1 attempt
2 attempts
3 attempts
After a student uses all available Check Answer attempts on a question, that answer becomes locked and changes are no longer allowed for that question.
Why Use Check Answer Limits?
They are especially useful for question types where students can quickly try several answers. Teachers can still provide formative feedback, including Answer Choice Explanations, while keeping students focused on reviewing the feedback rather than guessing repeatedly.
Set a Check Answer Limit
Open the activity and select Assign.
Go to the Grading and feedback settings.
Set Return scores to Instantly.
Under Return scores, find Total Check Answer Attempts.
Choose Unlimited, 1, 2, or 3.
Finish assigning the activity.
Note: Total Check Answer Attempts only appears when Return scores is set to Instantly.
Student Experience
When a student answers a question with Check Answer available, they can select Check answer to see whether their response is correct, partially correct, or incorrect.
If a Check Answer limit is set, students will see the number of Check Answer attempts remaining. If the assignment allows students to keep editing after they submit, students can continue using Check answer until they use all available Check Answer attempts.
Once the student reaches the limit:
The answer is locked.
The student can no longer change that answer.
If the last checked answer was incorrect, the student sees that changes are no longer allowed.
How Check Answer Works With Answer Choice Explanations
If Answer Choice Explanations are added to a question and Return scores is set to Instantly, students see the explanation when they use Check Answer. Using Check Answer Limits with Answer Choice Explanations lets students receive feedback right away while limiting repeated guessing.
