Add a Graph as a Content Item (Image)

Written by Neta Raz Studnitski

Overview

The Graph as Content feature allows teachers to build, customize, and embed math graphs directly into their formatives as instructional reference material - without the graph being dependent on a specific graded question.

Graphs are inserted into your formative as images but retain all of their underlying mathematical data. This means they are fully editable; you can seamlessly reopen and update a graph later instead of having to recreate it from scratch if you need to make a change.

With the graphing tool, you can create rich mathematical models using the following capabilities:

  • Plot Multiple Elements: Add linear equations, parabolas, exponential curves, number lines, and discrete coordinate points..

  • Customize Graph Settings: Use the settings panel to configure axis bounds (min/max), add X and Y axis labels, and choose tick types (decimals or fractions)..

  • Add Shading and Inequalities: Visually shade regions of the graph and use the "Flip shade" option to quickly change which side is shaded..

  • Browser-Style Tab Management: Easily manage multiple graphs within a single image block using the tabbed navigation at the top of the editor.

  • Keyboard Accessibility: Fully accessible keyboard navigation within the graph creation modal, allowing you to use arrow keys to cycle through your graphs and settings..

  • Accidental Deletion Safeguards: A confirmation dialog prevents you from accidentally deleting graphs that have active plotted points or shading.

Creating a Graph Content Item

  1. Open your formative and click the + (Add Item) button

  2. Select Image from the content menu

  3. In the image upload modal, click on Add a Graph

  4. Use the Graph Editor to build your visualization:
    - Use the Add Element dropdown (or the tabs at the top) to select the type of
    - graph you want to draw (Linear, Parabola, Exponential, etc.)
    - Click on the coordinate plane to plot your points
    - Open the Settings panel (gear icon) to adjust the graph bounds and tick marks
    - (Optional) Navigate to the Shading tab to shade specific inequalities

  5. Once your graph is ready, click Add as Content. The graph will be captured and inserted into your formative as an image block

Editing an Existing Graph

Because your graph's data is saved securely in the background, you never have to start over if you need to make a tweak!

  1. Locate the graph content item you want to edit in your formative

  2. Click the Replace Image button (or access the image actions menu, represented by the ⋮ three-dot icon on the image)

  3. The Graph Editor modal will re-open, pre-loaded with your exact original graph state, including your axes, elements, and shading

  4. Make your desired adjustments

  5. Click Add as Content to update and save the new graph to your formative

Deleting a Graph

  • To delete the entire block: Simply delete the image content item from your formative by clicking the trash can icon next to the block

  • To delete a single graph line/curve inside the editor: While inside the Graph Editor, select the tab of the graph you wish to remove and click the Delete graph button. If the graph contains plotted points or shading, a confirmation dialog will appear to ensure you don't accidentally lose your work
