Add Formative as a Trusted App

If your school/district uses Google Workspace for Education accounts in order to access Formative, then your Google Workspace admin must mark Formative as a trusted application in Google Workspace.

You can review Google’s guidance on how to confirm third party app settings here. And to make it easy, here's a quick summary of how Google Workspace admins add Formative as a trusted app:

  1. Log in to your Google Workspace for Education admin account.

  2. Navigate to the Admin console and click on "Security."

  3. From the Security menu, select "API Controls."

  4. Under "Third-party apps," click on "Manage third-party access."

  5. Click on the "+ Trusted" button and search for "Formative."

  6. Select Formative from the search results and click "Add."

That's it! You've successfully listed Formative as a trusted app, ensuring uninterrupted access for all our Google Workspace for Education users.

FAQs

🙋🏽 How do I make sure my students don’t lose access to Formative as a result of this change?

Your Google Workspace admin must approve Formative as a trusted application for third party application access to Google Workspace prior to the October 23, 2023 deadline. If you are the administrator for Google Workspace for Education, follow the instructions included above. If you are a teacher and you or your students have lost access to Formative via Google, you can use other sign in methods (see below). We also recommend that you contact your school or district administrators to let them know that Newsela is critical to your instruction and should be added as a trusted app.

🙋🏿‍♂️ Who is most impacted by this change?

This change could directly impact both teachers’ and students’ ability to access Formative. Students will be blocked from signing into third-party apps you haven't confirmed access settings for, so be sure to update your settings before the deadline.

🙋🏼 I am a current Formative customer, does this mean I am not impacted by this change?

No. Because this change is based on your Google Workspace administration settings, it will still require an administrator to approve the use of Formative by ensuring third party application access. If you do not take action, students and teachers who use Formative for free or as part of a paid subscription will also be impacted.

🙋🏻‍♀️ How do I know if my District or School has Formative identified as a trusted application?

There are a couple of ways that you can identify if Formative is identified as a trusted application at your school/district. First, you can contact your Google Workspace administrator and ask if Formative has a trusted status. Second, you can check to see if your students are able to successfully log in and access Formative with their Google account after October 23, 2023 (Note: this will only be apparent after the October 23 deadline).

🙋🏽‍♀️ Are there alternative methods that I can use to log-in to Formative?

Yes. Teachers and students have other ways they log-in to Formative without Google credentials. You can learn more about the different ways to sign in on the Formative Support site. Reach out to Formative Support for assistance.
